Floyd Vegas, lead singer/guitarist of York-based band God Bless Our
Mobile Home, wishes to be taken seriously (just kidding).
The three pals - rounded out (in stage name clarity) with Vegas'
brother-in-law, Whitey, on bass and Jack McGraw on drums - united in
1995 and resurrected GBOMH in December 2001 after a yearlong layover.
Vegas says McGraw's farming responsibilities caused the band to
eventually taper off. "We have a tradition of playing the Murph's
Christmas party every year, and they asked us to play again last
year, we got a pretty good response, so we started doing it again,"
says Vegas.
You have to hear a GBOMH live show for yourself, because Vegas
describes it (between snickers) as a cross between Pantera and
Destiny's Child. "Yeah, we're looking for our fourth vocalist, but
we'd prefer a bass or alto voice," he jokes. "We get our funk on.
We've got our bling-bling."
But in all seriousness, Vegas confides, you can expect a good-time
rock 'n roll show. The trio has integrated a lot of originals (mostly
about drinking and women) into the sets; an EP may be released
sometime this summer. And audience participation is the rule - the
band will reward tempting prizes like plastic sun visors, Virgin Mary
nightlights, or pitchers of beer to brave contestants who complete
various feats.
"Our biggest goal is to have fun," summarizes Vegas. "We don't have
the 12-step game plan yet. We're just having too good a time for
three York County yocals to be able to go out once a month and get a
crowd." And what keeps him going? "Jack always has cold Old Milwaukee
in his fridge," Vegas laughs.
