When you've got a room full of people ready to party, there's no time
to waste on no sucka emcees. It takes just two people to make your
party go right, two old-school party rappers to make it outta sight:
Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock.
It's been nearly 15 years since Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock erupted onto
the hip-hop scene with the monstrous dance track, "It Takes Two."
While the song barely broke into the Top-40 radio charts, massive
club airplay made an underground sensation of the Harlem-based duo.
Their follow-up single, "Joy and Pain," helped to solidify Rob Base
and DJ E-Z Rock's place in hip-hop history. The group sold several
million copies and was propelled from near-anonymity to the heights
of fame in less than one year.
While the dynamic duo's fame has dwindled over the past decade, "It
Takes Two" remains one of the most requested dance tracks in the club
scene. "This one record, I don't know what it is with it. It just
keeps going and going," exclaims DJ E-Z Rock during a recent
interview with the Fly. "Some party records never die. You can put
some records on at a club or at a party, you know, and people will
just get up and dance because they remember the good times they were
having when the record was first introduced to the world. ... I feel
that party music is never going to go away, because people always
want to go somewhere to have a good time."
Base and Rock are currently touring the country in anticipation of
releasing their first album in over eight years. "We have an album
ready right now that we just finished doing, and we're shopping a
deal. Or, we're going to put it out ourselves, put it out there and
just see what response that we get back from it," Rock explains.
"Basically, we're going to try to keep [our music] up-to-date, but
still party, still stay in that type of groove. We ain't no street
people, we ain't no hardcore, we're not like that at all, you
understand? We just like to have fun. You'll see it in our show. You
definitely see it."
You really can see it when the tour swings through Harrisburg later
this month. "Expect the hype, a fast-moving show," Rock says. "I
mean, 'cause we really go through the show real quick. We also get
the people involved. Like, one part of the show we have people come
aboard and get on the stage and do little dance contests. And we
gonna have people come on stage and do 'It Takes Two' with us. ...
Just come on out and have a good time. Bring your party shoes, your
dancing shoes."
