Adrian "Buddy" King doesn't consider himself a good piano player, but others might disagree. Born and raised in York, he started taking piano lessons at 8 or 9 and has since become a well-known regular act in York clubs.
"My first solo act was an accident," says King, "I started playing at a club in York called The Talk of the Town when someone was sick and they needed a fill-in." And, since that debut in 1990, he's been accompanying his strong vocals with an electronic keyboard. "Like a one-man band complete with bass, strings, and drums," says King.
King plays a variety of original music Ð from contemporary, to rhythm and blues. "I span about 15 years over the course of the evening when I play," he says. He also covers such greats as Sinatra or Mathis, but he doesn't really consider them covers. "Most times," he says, "I play my own version from what I hear on the records." All in all, he likes to keep things original, and play a song that's "him," instead of just playing a tune to fill a request.
King's career has also taken him south to the palm trees in Fort Lauderdale for a short stint in 1996 for four months, where he played at happy hours for a club on Federal Highway. And in November of 1997, he released his CD, Love Will Live ... Will Carry On. He's now preparing to release his second CD, which will be recorded live during the first week of December at Duets' in York. "I've been getting a lot of requests for this," says King. "My first CD just didn't get across to listeners what I do live in the nightclubs."
