When attending a performance by local band South Street, be ready to get involved in the show. "There's a lot of audience participation," says Mike Sites, who plays guitar, blues harp, flute and sings with the group. "We physically get out into the audience...and we encourage people to get up on stage and participate."
Sites says the band believes in an "open stage," adding, "We invite any sort of nonsense and fun. We encourage people to become one with the band."
The group performs what Sites describes as "party and dance music. Everything from R&B to rock and roll." Their playlist includes tunes by Van Morrison and Joe Cocker, as well as some techno music and some current songs by artists like Hootie and the Blowfish.
Joining Sites in the band are Jimmy Wank on drums and vocals and Steve Liller on keyboards and vocals. All three are seasoned musicians, with Sites and Wank having toured the country for years with the show band Crossroads, and Liller having been a member of the band Daddy C. and All Stars. When those groups disbanded, the trio created South Street about 10 years ago.
Even though they've been performing for quite some time, Sites says the group has no intentions of slowing down, at least not now. "As long as people come out to see us," he says, "we're going to keep doing it."
