Doktor Blu, the area's newest blues and R&B act, is going for the gold.
"Our real mission in life is to go out and be weekend warriors, to be
basically a bar band. That's what our agenda is, but we want to be the most
kick-ass bar band you've ever heard," says bassist Ralph Molesworth.
Although Doktor Blu has been playing the local circuit for only two months,
the members themselves are well-versed in the area's blues scene. "We're
all veteran musicians," Molesworth explains. "We've been around the music
business for a long time. We know what we want to do, and we're trying to
do it."
Joining Molesworth are drummer/ lead singer J.J. Dugan, formerly of the
Triple A Blues Band and the Phipps Brothers; guitarist Dave Walton,
formerly of the Silverhawks; and harmonica player Bill Frederick, formerly
of Krypton City Blues Revue.
"We do primarily covers," says Molesworth. "However, we're not a cover
band. What do I mean by that? We have all our own arrangements ... We
really put some spins on songs that people think they know, or think
they've heard before."
Show-goers can expect to hear covers from artists like Robert Cray, Junior
Wells, and the Rolling Stones, as well as a handful of blues and funk
originals that Molesworth hopes to record in the future. "We do whatever
material we feel like doing, and we do it any way we feel like doing it,
and we hope you like it," he says. "We play our asses off. We don't stand
there like statues, but by the same token, we're not doing *NSYNC moves.
Dammit, we're a blues band. We just come on stage and we jam. I gotta tell
you, this is the most fun I've ever had with a band." Check out Doktor Blu
